Hey friends!
Last Friday, I decided it was time to do something fun in my class on Friday. We've been working really hard lately and it was time for some fun in science class! At the beginning of the year, I taught my students all about lab equipment and this DIY lip balm kit was a perfect refresher on lab equipment and rules. Plus, everyone got to take home a souvenir!
This DIY lip balm kit from Urban Kangaroo is perfect for home, classroom, summer camp, girls' night in, birthday parties... the list goes on! My students are in 6th grade, but you could do this with just about any age 5 and over (it's fun for adults too, not just kids!). There are 24 lip balm tubes in this kit, the ingredients are all-natural, and you're given just about everything needed to make some awesome lip balm.
It includes:
- Cocoa & beeswax pellets
- Grapeseed oil
- Flavorings
- Pipettes
- Lip balm tubes & color-able stickers
- colored pencil
- stir sticks
You need:
- a stovetop or hot plate
- a pot & a bowl to make a double broiler

First, we set out all of the ingredients and I had the students recall the lab equipment that we got out. We talked about the ingredients and where they came from. We then started coloring our labels. All of the kids (yes, even the boys) were super excited.

We then created our double broilers using different sized beakers, hot plates, and aluminum pans. Adult supervision is key here. Because I was standing so close and my students are a little older, I let them stir while the beakers were on the hot plates. They felt extra grown up and scientific!
Next up, we poured in the grapeseed oil and the flavoring. Every single one of them could not stop talking about how great the vanilla macaroon flavor smelled. There is an option to melt in some of your own lipstick at this stage if you want to add color to your lip balm as well! The last thing left to do was to fill up our lip balm tubes with the melted wax combo. It's worth noting that you should roll up the bottom of the lip balm tube to about halfway to ensure that there will be enough wax for all 24 tubes.
anddddd success!

Special thanks to Urban Kangaroo for this super fun kit! All of their kits can be found at urbankangaroo.com and on Amazon!
